These dogs are similar to their ancestors of 200 year gone by and were bred in the early 19th century by Reverend John Russell, hence their name. In April 2007, a Jack Russell named George gave his life saving 5 children form two pitbulls at a carnival in New Zealand, charging them and allowing the children to escape. A memorial was erected and George was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal posthumously.
